If you are craving a glass of wine while visiting Maui, look no further than MauiWine. High on the slopes of Haleakala, MauiWine pairs mountain views, royal history, and island-grown pineapple wine in one memorable stop. Parrish Maui is happy to share what makes this winery a rewarding day trip from our vacation rentals in West Maui.
Is MauiWine Really the Only Winery on Maui?
Yes. MauiWine is widely recognized as the only winery on the island, and it sits in the Upcountry community of Ulupalakua. The winery began in 1974, when Ulupalakua Ranch owner C. Pardee Erdman teamed up with Napa Valley winemaker Emil Tedeschi to plant a vineyard on the slopes of Haleakala.
What Makes MauiWine Special?
A visit to MauiWine here offers flavors you will not find at a typical mainland tasting room. A great example is the signature pineapple wine. While waiting for the first grapes to mature, the team experimented with the island’s abundant pineapples. The result, Maui Blanc, debuted in 1977 and remains a signature pour. Maui Splash and the sparkling Hula o Maui round out the pineapple lineup, all made with sweet Maui Gold pineapples.
The property also has a fascinating royal history. The location once served as Rose Ranch, a favorite retreat of King Kalakaua. The historic King’s Cottage, where the king stayed, now serves as the tasting room.
What Can You Do When You Visit?
The King’s Cottage Tasting Room is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Guests enjoy seated tastings at covered outdoor tables, with a menu of wine flights, wines by the glass, wine cocktails, and small bites. Reservations are recommended, and you can reserve a table online before your trip.
For a deeper look at the estate, consider one of the guided experiences:
- Historic Walking Tour & Tasting: On Wednesday and Friday, stroll the grounds beneath century-old trees before settling in for a seated tasting.
- Under the Camphor: On Wednesday, savor a semi-private, personalized wine tasting in an outdoor setting.
- The Tasting Table: On Thursday, enjoy a small-group wine-and-food pairing with stories about the estate.
Where Can You Eat Near the Winery?
MauiWine offers cheeses, snacks, and small bites. However, if you are looking for a full meal, right across the road, Ulupalakua Ranch Store & Grill serves burgers, rib plates, salad, and more. Many of the dishes use beef, elk, and venison raised right on the mountain. Enjoy your meal at a picnic table outdoors.
