If you think Maui is beautiful on land, wait until you see what lies beneath the surrounding waters of the Pacific Ocean. It is a whole new world under the sea, colorful and bright, with fish, sea creatures, and coral that is sure to impress. Maui’s Northwest coast features tons of great snorkeling spots, and if you are staying in Kapalua, you will not have to go far to reach them.
The Kapalua area is rich with ideal snorkeling spots. Whether you are a snorkeling pro or new to the activity, Kapalua’s snorkeling destinations have something for everyone. Parrish Maui offers luxury vacation rentals in some of Kapalua’s best resorts. We are happy to share our local expertise and help you find the right snorkeling spot for you near Kapalua.
Kapalua Bay
Kapalua Bay’s sheltered waters make it a great place to snorkel for snorkelers of all skill levels. Kapalua Bay is protected by two reefs, making for calm waters and a relaxing snorkeling location. We recommend snorkeling on the right side of the bay, where the ocean floor is rocky instead of sandy. That way, you will have clearer visibility of the fish and aquatic life that calls Kapalua Bay home.
There is a delightful mix of fish that you will find snorkeling in Kapalua Bay. Some standouts include the reef triggerfish, Hawaii’s state fish, butterfly fish, surgeon fish, tang, parrot fish, and porcupine fish. Besides fish, there is some healthy coral you can find snorkeling on the right side of the bay. Sea turtles, eels, and urchins are other creatures you might be lucky enough to view here.
Napili Bay
Located South of Kapalua Bay, Napili Bay is another snorkeling haven. Napili Bay is one of Maui’s most popular beaches for families, so do not be surprised to find it crowded. For that reason, we recommend getting to Napili Bay early to secure a spot on the beach and enjoy snorkeling in less crowded waters.
Like Kapalua Bay, the right side is the best for snorkeling, as it is away from the sand and a bit more protected. With that said, experienced snorkelers with strong swimming skills can go to the left side for a different look at the area’s reef fish; just expect much choppier water. Out in the middle of Napili Bay is a lot of sand, which is not ideal for snorkeling but is excellent for sea turtles, making it worth your while to at least pay some attention to the center of the bay.
Black Rock at Kaanapali Beach
Kaanapali Beach is a popular beach for all kinds of outdoor activities, but snorkeling is where it really shines. The best part of the beach to snorkel is at Black Rock, the large rocky point on the North end of the beach. If you stick around the region of Black Rock nearest the beach, you are in for calm, clear waters and sights that include coral and the typical reef fish.
Strong swimmers and experienced snorkelers should consider going around the bend, where you will find a cove to explore. Even further out, you will see a flat, sandy bottom. In this unassuming spot, keep a lookout for beautiful eagle rays, which frequent the area. Sea stars, urchins, cucumbers, and sea turtles also make appearances. Whether you are sticking to the part of Black Rock nearest Kaanapali Beach or going around the point, you are sure to experience some amazing snorkeling.
