If you are looking for adventure in Maui, the Mahana Ridge Trail is a good place to start. However, be warned that this trail is challenging and requires a lengthy time commitment. Still, Mahana Ridge Trail will immerse you in nature, allowing you to experience the lush forests that call the island home. It is a strenuous hike but a rewarding one. Are you up for the challenge? The team at Parrish Maui has some tips for conquering Mahana Ridge Trail.
About the Mahana Ridge Trail
Mahana Ridge Trail is a 9.2-mile out and back trail that takes hikers through an abundance of native and introduced plant and tree species. The trail begins at D.T. Fleming Beach Park and ends at the Maunalei Arboretum.
Almost immediately after hopping on the trail, the scenery will begin to change, becoming thick with plant life. The forest is incredibly immersive; it is an excellent place to be one with your thoughts in nature. Eventually, you will reach a road you must cross to continue on the trail. After two miles, you will reach a tranquil reservoir. The reservoir is where many people stop for a break. If you are not in the mood to complete the whole hike, this is a good place to stop and head back the way you came.
For those pushing onward, keep going onto the dirt road before keeping left at the three-way intersection. There are signs marking the trail throughout the hike, but it can be confusing. As you return to thicker forests, keep an eye out for wild pineapple growing. At this point, things get a little intense with steeper slopes you will have to walk up. At the top, you will have a great view from the lookout. When you start making a half-mile descent, know that you are near Maunalei Arboretum. After you reach the arboretum, you have completed the trail.
All in all, expect 2000 feet of elevation gain throughout the hike. If you want to hike through dense forests, this is the hike for you. While it lacks panoramic views, it is still well worth the effort.
What to Bring When Hiking Mahana Ridge Trail
Since Mahana Ridge Trail is a long and challenging hike, it is necessary to show up prepared. We recommend wearing good hiking shoes as you ascend and descend quite often. The hiking shoes also help handle the mud, which is prevalent near the end of the trail. Mahana Ridge Trail can also get very wet, even with the canopy above, so we recommend bringing a poncho, so you do not get too wet. With the trail’s length, bringing plenty of food and water is a must.
