When it comes to Maui’s beaches, each one has its own personality. Kamaole Beach III, located in Kihei, is commonly thought of as the best of the three Kamaole Beaches for families, groups, and anyone who wants more than just sand and surf. With its expansive grassy park, shaded picnic areas, and wide shoreline, Kamaole Beach III offers the perfect setting for an all-day beach outing.
Kamaole Beach III Combines Park & Beach Access
What makes Kamaole Beach III different from its neighbors is the access to the park that stretches along the top of the beach. Here, you will find picnic tables, barbecue grills, and plenty of open lawn space. It is one of the few beaches on Maui where you can spend your day alternating between sand and grass, making it popular for parties, gatherings, and family picnics.
The beach itself is a crescent of golden sand, framed by rocky outcroppings on both ends. Like the other Kamaole Beaches, Kamaole Beach III’s location also makes it a premier sunset spot, where the day ends with vibrant colored skies over the Pacific Ocean and neighboring islands.
While many Maui beaches are known for snorkeling, including the other Kamaole Beaches, Kamaole Beach III is better known for its variety of ocean conditions that cater to both swimmers and wave riders. The middle of the beach usually has manageable waves perfect for bodyboarding, skimboarding, and even beginner surfing when the swell is right. Families with kids often enjoy this stretch because the waves are fun without being overwhelming.
For snorkeling, the rocky ends of the beach still deliver a chance to see reef fish and the occasional sea turtle, but the bigger draw here is the blend of activities available. Visitors can start with a swim, catch a few waves on a boogie board, then retreat to the lawn for lunch before heading back out again. The grassy park is also a great place to toss a football, fly a kite, or simply relax under a tree with a book.
Kamaole Beach III is one of the few beaches in South Maui with a consistent lifeguard presence, adding peace of mind for families. Combined with showers, restrooms, and plenty of picnic space, it is easy to see why this beach has become a favorite for locals and returning visitors alike.
