Makena State Park
For a taste of Maui’s gorgeous beaches and coastline, head to Makena State Park on the island’s southwest shore. This massive 165-acre park offers three beaches – Big Beach, Puu Olai, and Onelui Beach. From luxurious golden sands to black sand made up from ground lava, these beaches offer distinct experiences. Between these three beaches, you can enjoy all of your favorite beach activities, including swimming, surfing, bodysurfing, snorkeling, and more. Hikes that bring you to dramatic lava rock formations add even more incredible scenery.
Waianapanapa State Park
Waianapanapa is often hailed as the most beautiful state park in all of Hawaii, and it is easy to see why. This lush coastal park along Maui’s Hana Highway features brilliant black sand beaches, sea stacks, lava rock arches, hiking trails through tropical forests, and incredible views at every turn. Must-see sights include the stunning sea arches, hiking to the Waianapanapa Caves, and the iconic black sand beach.
Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area
For a different perspective on Maui’s natural beauty, venture up to the island’s central highlands and the Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area. At nearly 6,200 feet above sea level, this park offers crisp mountain air, towering redwood trees, and hiking trails with wonderful views of Central and West Maui and the islands of Kahoolawe, Molokai, and Lanai.
Iao Valley State Monument
Located in central Maui, Iao Valley is an other-worldly 4,000-acre park featuring the 1,200-foot Iao Needle, an iconic green-covered rock pinnacle that is a must-see. A paved trail makes the walk to the Iao Needle accessible. Wind through the valley, passing streams, lush rainforest, and a garden with native Hawaiian plants.
Reservations
Some of Maui’s state parks require reservations. These parks include Waianapanapa State Park and Iao Valley State Monument. Prior to your visit, be sure to make a reservation online using the Go Hawaii State Parks website. You will have to reserve a specific time slot, but typically there are plenty of times available.
