If you are looking for one of Maui’s most picturesque and secluded beaches, Secret Cove Beach should be at the top of your list. This intimate stretch of sand, also known as Paako Cove, offers incredible views, a romantic atmosphere, and stunning photo opportunities. The team at Parrish Maui is here to help give you all the information you need to plan a great visit to Secret Cove Beach.
Secret Cove Beach is a Hidden Gem
Located just south of Big Beach in Makena, Secret Cove Beach is a small, tucked-away spot that feels worlds apart from the busier beaches of Maui. The cove is framed by lava rock formations and swaying palm trees, giving it a truly tropical feel. Its scenic beauty has made it a popular spot for wedding ceremonies and professional photography, but it is just as enjoyable for a quiet afternoon by the ocean.
The beach itself is relatively small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm. Powdery golden sand and turquoise waters create the perfect backdrop for relaxation. Visitors can enjoy sunbathing, swimming in calm conditions, or simply taking in the breathtaking ocean views. Keep an eye out for Molokini Crater and the neighboring island of Kahoolawe, which are both visible from the shoreline.
While swimming is possible when the water is calm, waves and currents can sometimes be stronger here, making it less ideal for young children or inexperienced swimmers. Unlike larger beaches on Maui, Secret Cove lacks lifeguards, restrooms, and a parking lot. Visitors typically park along the street and walk down a narrow pathway between lava rock walls to access the beach.
The lack of amenities is part of what keeps Secret Cove quiet and uncrowded compared to other destinations. Its seclusion makes it a perfect spot for couples, honeymooners, or anyone who wants to escape the crowds and experience a slice of Maui’s natural beauty in peace.
Maui Road Directions to Paako Cove
If you are staying in one of our Parrish Maui vacation rentals in West Maui, Secret Cove Beach is about an hour’s drive away. From Kaanapali or Kapalua, take Honoapiilani Highway through Maalaea and into Kihei. Continue on Wailea Alanui Drive until it turns into Makena Road.
As you drive past Big Beach, look for a stone wall with a narrow entryway on the right-hand side of the road. This small opening leads to a short path between lava rock walls, which will take you directly onto Secret Cove Beach. Parking is limited to roadside spaces along Makena Road, so plan to arrive early.
