When planning your Maui vacation, you will likely encounter a list of must-visit beaches, scenic drives, and luaus. However, one of the island’s most spectacular attractions lies beneath the surface of its alluring waters. Olowalu Reef, often referred to as the “Crown Jewel” of Maui’s coral reefs, is an underwater wonderland that deserves a spot at the top of your itinerary.
The team at Parrish Maui is here to help you prepare for an unforgettable time at Olowalu Reef. We have created a guide to help you know what to expect from this incredible attraction that will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your Maui vacation.
What is Olowalu Reef?
Olowalu Reef is a vast and vibrant coral ecosystem stretching over 900 acres along Maui’s western coastline. This fringing reef system is one of the largest and most diverse in Hawaii, with some coral colonies dating back over 500 years. The reef extends from the shoreline to about half a mile offshore, creating a protected environment that supports an incredible array of marine life.
The reef’s unique topography includes shallow inner areas, deeper outer regions, and underwater ridges and valleys. This varied landscape provides habitats for numerous species of coral, fish, and other marine organisms. Olowalu is home to over 350 species of fish, nearly a quarter of all known Hawaiian reef fish species.
Why Visit Olowalu Reef?
There are an abundance of reasons to visit Olowalu Reef. Most visit for the exceptional snorkeling and diving. Olowalu offers some of the best snorkeling and diving experiences in Maui. The shallow, calm waters of the inner reef are perfect for beginners, while the outer reef provides exciting opportunities for more experienced snorkelers and divers. Olowalu Reef is the only one of Maui’s reefs that is protected from the trade winds, so even on windy days, conditions are good for exploring.
While snorkeling or diving, you will encounter a wide variety of colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasionally manta rays. Olowalu is known as a “cleaning station” for manta rays, making it one of the few places in Hawaii where you might spot these majestic creatures. With over 350 manta rays, Olowalu has the fourth-largest population in the world.
Beyond the beautiful underwater conditions, there is history and cultural significance to consider when visiting. The area was once home to a thriving Hawaiian village and is considered a sacred site.
How to Experience Olowalu Reef
Olowalu Reef is easily accessible from Mile Marker 14 on the Honoapiilani Highway, about four miles south of Lahaina. There are several ways to explore this underwater marvel. Many visitors choose to join a tour. There are several snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding tours that will get you up close and personal with Olowalu Reef. However, visiting via a tour is not required. You can always rent your own equipment and explore the reef on your own.
