All About the Ohai Trail
The Ohai Trail is a 1.2-mile loop trail located near Wailuku, about a 40-minute drive from our vacation rentals in Kapalua. You can find the parking lot for the trail between mile markers 40 and 41. The parking lot is small in size, accommodating only seven cars, but since the Ohai Trail is something of a hidden gem, it is not difficult to secure a spot.
Due to the short distance and relatively flat terrain, the Ohai Trail is known as one of the best hikes for families on Maui. This hike only takes a little over 30 minutes to complete, but do not let its brevity fool you; this trail offers a lot of beautiful scenery. The well-kept dirt path is surrounded by a wide range of lush, emerald-green vegetation, making for a tranquil setting for your hike. However, there are no trees to shade you, so be sure to wear sunscreen. To avoid the heat, try hiking the trail in the morning.
While the lush greenery along the Ohai Trail is quite stunning, the real highlight is the coastal ocean views. This trail meanders from the inner island to the Papanalahoa Point Shoreline, bringing you right along the ocean. Hikers are frequently dazzled by spectacular views of the water and rock formations below. Be sure to bring your camera because you will certainly want to capture these fantastic views.
One of the best things about the Ohai Trail is the lack of traffic. Odds are good that you will not encounter a single other soul on your hike, making the Ohai Trail the ideal place for a peaceful nature retreat.
