La Perouse Bay, also known as Keoneoio Bay, is one of Maui’s most striking and untamed natural destinations. Far removed from busy beach parks and resort crowds, this rugged coastline is located at the end of Makena Road in South Maui and is home to exceptional outdoor adventures. For travelers seeking a blend of marine exploration and scenic hiking, La Perouse Bay rewards those willing to venture off the beaten path.
La Perouse Bay Offers a Unique Coastal Landscape
La Perouse Bay sits in an area shaped by Maui’s most recent lava flows, created from volcanic activity that occurred hundreds of years ago. The stark contrast between the dark, hardened lava fields and the turquoise Pacific Ocean offers spectacular views that feel otherworldly. It is named after a French explorer, Jean-Francois de Galaup La Perouse, who reached the area in 1786.
Snorkeling at La Perouse Bay
For seasoned snorkelers, La Perouse Bay provides a rewarding marine experience. The bay’s rocky shoreline and clear waters are home to vibrant coral formations and a variety of tropical fish, sea turtles, and other ocean life. There is even a chance you will be lucky enough to swim in the presence of dolphins.
It is important to note that the bay’s open ocean exposure can create strong currents and changing conditions, making snorkeling here best suited for experienced swimmers with proper gear. Generally, the further you swim out, the clearer the visibility becomes. Early morning visits generally offer calmer seas and better visibility, enhancing the snorkeling experience. La Perouse Bay is not a snorkeling experience suited for beginners.
Hiking
If you are not up for a snorkeling adventure, head to La Perouse Bay for a chance to explore Maui’s rugged coastline on foot. You will traverse lava fields, creating a unique hiking experience. This scenic adventure can go on for miles, so be sure to keep track of how far you have gone unless you want a long hike back to the car. You should also bring plenty of water; there is virtually no shade. Morning hiking here is ideal.
This area is also a section of the King’s Trail, also known as the King’s Highway. This trail was originally built during the reign of King Piilani in the 16th century. Today, this section is part of the Hoapili Trail.
One of the best parts about hiking around La Perouse Bay is the marine life you might see. During whale season, this is an excellent opportunity to spot humpback whales. Year-round, it is possible to catch a glimpse of spinner dolphins playing. Be sure to pack your binoculars for a better view.
