One of the best places to catch the sunset in West Maui is Kaanapali Beach. This long stretch of white sand is considered one of the world’s best beaches, with its clear waters and pristine white sands. Watch as the sun gives way to brilliant shades of orange and pink. Kaanapali Beach also offers views of the Hawaiian Islands of Lanai and Molokai, which can add another dimension to your sunset photos.
Haleakala Summit
While it requires a bit more effort and advance planning, making the journey up to the 10,023-foot summit of Haleakala is absolutely worth it for the incredible sunset views. From the peak, you will be treated to a 360-degree panorama as the sun appears to drop directly into the clouds. Just be sure to bundle up, as temperatures can be quite chilly at the summit, especially after dark. Unlike sunrises at Haleakala, you do not need a reservation in advance, but be aware that parking fills up fast.
Lahaina Pali Trail
One of the more active ways to witness a great sunset on Maui is with a hike. The Lahaina Pali Trail is a challenging five-mile out-and-back trek over rocky terrain. However, you can shorten the trail by just hiking from one of the trailheads. In that case, we recommend starting in Maalaea. Regardless, this trail offers panoramic views of Haleakala and the Maalaea coastline. The hike is challenging, and the timing can be tricky, but the sunset views are amazing.
