Have you ever been so intimidated by an attraction’s name that you skipped it altogether? West Maui’s Acid War Zone Trail sounds like a tough, rugged hike suitable only for the most advanced hikers, but in reality, it is a short hike that is moderate in difficulty. The rewards of this hike are otherworldly landscapes, scenic views, and the iconic Nakalele Blowhole.
The team at Parrish Maui is here to help you plan a fantastic vacation to Maui. Our vacation rentals in Kapalua are just a short drive from some of West Maui’s top attractions, including Acid War Zone Trail. Here is a look at what you can expect from this intriguing hike.
Acid War Zone Trail: A Hidden Gem
The Acid War Zone Trail is the scenic route to get to the Nakalele Blowhole, a memorable attraction where water trapped in an underwater lava tube is forced up, creating a waterspout that shoots up to 100 feet in the air. While most travelers take the easy route known as the Nakalele Blowhole Trail, Acid War Zone Trail is a quieter, more scenic alternative route.
The trail is 1.3 miles, just a bit longer than the Nakalele Blowhole Trail, but it is mostly unmarked, and traversing the terrain is moderately challenging. You will start the trail at the dirt pull-off on Route 340, and you will head downhill to the Nakalele Lighthouse, which resembles a light beacon more than a lighthouse. Once there, you will continue the hike down, and this is where the terrain gets rocky. You will reach a lava shelf that features interesting formations molded over the years from lava and the tide.
This is where things get interesting. The lava stone landscape is truly unique, and how the trail got its name; the jagged stones and barren landscape make the area look like it was created as the result of a war scene. As you continue walking, you will come across small blowholes and tidepools you can explore. After a short distance, you will look down on the famous Nakalele Blowhole, where you can watch this natural geyser spray water into the sky.
Safety at Nakalele Blowhole
While Nakalele Blowhole is an amazing sight, you should proceed with caution. Getting too close to the blowhole can be a very dangerous experience. To make the most of your visit while maintaining safety, we recommend only stepping on dry rocks, not getting too close, and not turning your back to the ocean. With these tips, you will be able to take in the majesty of Nakalele Blowhole while staying safe.
