If you are looking for the ideal place to snorkel, scuba dive, or surf on Maui’s northwest shore, look no further than Honolua Bay. This majestic destination is a popular spot for many water activities and draws crowds year-round. Parrish Maui is excited to provide you with all the information you need to plan the perfect outing to Honolua Bay.
A Honolua Bay Guide from a Local Perspective
Located in Lahaina, Honolua Bay is well-known for its exceptional snorkeling and diving. It is a part of a Marine Life Conservation District, so fishing is not permitted here. Honolua Bay has conditions ideal for all sorts of aquatic life and the bay is filled with a wide variety of fish species, sea turtles, and coral.
Before you rush to put on your snorkeling or diving gear, you should know that it is a bit of a swim to get to the reef and aquatic life that calls the bay home. However, it is undoubtedly worth the swim. You are guaranteed to see an abundance of colorful fish and, if you are lucky, a sea turtle or manta ray.
In addition to snorkeling and scuba diving, Honolua Bay is also a premier surfing destination, especially in the winter. High surf occurs in the winter months, attracting surfers to ride its powerful waves. Even if you are not a surfer, watching them ride the waves during this time is truly spectacular.
Back on land, Honolua Bay is extremely rocky and is not the type of beach to sit back and catch some sun; this is a location geared towards water activities.
While short on amenities; there is a parking lot, but it gets full quickly. You can find portable restrooms in the parking lot, but no restrooms are on the bay. However, despite the lack of amenities, its natural beauty, and stellar conditions make it a top destination in Maui.
Maui Road Directions to Honolua Bay
Driving North on Honoapiilani Highway, keep an eye out for Mile Marker 33. Shortly after the marker, you will drive over a one-lane bridge that leads to a small parking lot. There are only a few spaces in the parking lot, so if it is full, you will have to park on either side of Honoapiilani Highway and walk back to the lot to get to Honolua Bay.
