If you are looking for a unique way to experience Maui’s incredible natural scenery up close, consider going horseback riding. With numerous ranches and stables offering guided tours through diverse landscapes, a horseback adventure allows you to immerse yourself in Maui’s beauty from atop a friendly, four-legged companion.
The team at Parrish Maui is here to help you prepare for your upcoming island getaway. We are highlighting some of the great horseback riding opportunities on Maui so you can decide if you should add this exciting activity to your itinerary.
Horseback Riding Options on Maui
Located about 10 minutes from our vacation rentals in Kapalua is Ironwood Ranch in Lahaina. Since 1983, Ironwood Ranch has given locals and visitors alike a chance to experience some of Maui’s most scenic trails on horseback. Their horseback riding tours are for a maximum of four people, which is nice but limiting for bigger groups. Ride along the foothills of Maui and take in the beautiful scenery as your guide leads the way.
Another great option is Circle M Ranch in Wailuku. The experts at Circle M Ranch provide a range of horseback riding adventures that show off Maui’s picturesque coastline. With three unique riding tours, there is something for everyone. The Morning Trail Experience is the most popular tour. With paniolos, also known as Hawaiian cowboys, as your guide, you will take in the beauty of the island’s valleys, meadows, and cliffs on a morning ride.
Circle M Ranch also offers private tours. A private ride provides a more intimate experience for you and your group. You will have the trails all to yourself and receive a more personalized horseback riding experience.
There is also Maui Mountain Activities, a 500-acre ranch in the West Maui Mountains. On these tours, you will gain approximately 250 feet of elevation, witness waterfalls, and ride down the coastline. Unlike other horseback riding options on Maui, with Maui Mountain Activities, you may or may not be riding on a horse; the ranch also has mules available for riding.
No previous horseback riding experience is required for Maui’s guided tours, as you will be paired with a well-trained, gentle horse and accompanied by experienced wranglers. However, riders should be prepared to saddle up for between one and four hours, depending on the tour.
