Maui is known for its breathtaking landscapes, and Honokalani Beach is no exception. Nestled on the Hana coast in Waianapanapa State Park, this unique destination boasts bold black sands that provide an intriguing backdrop for a day at the beach. The team at Parrish Maui is here to give you some background on Honokalani so you can make the most of your visit. Here is a look at what you can expect when visiting Honokalani Beach.
Why Visit Honokalani Beach?
With over 80 accessible beaches on Maui, you might be wondering why Honokalani Beach is worth a visit. What sets Honokalani Beach apart is its captivating black sand, a result of volcanic activity that has shaped the island over millennia. The lava flow cooled, hardened, and then broken into tiny pieces over years of being pelted by waves, resulting in the black sand. As you step onto the beach, the contrast between the dark sand and the vibrant blue hues of the Pacific Ocean is nothing short of amazing.
Do not expect to enjoy typical beach activities at Honokalani Beach. Although the beach’s glistening waters may look prime for a swim, water activities, including swimming, can be dangerous here. For the most part, ocean conditions on the beach are rough, and strong rip currents make getting in the water a hazard.
Waianapanapa State Park
After you have explored Honokalani Beach, check out the rest of the incredible offerings at Waianapanapa State Park. Favorite activities at the park include hiking, fishing, and sightseeing. The park is considered a sacred place of the Hawaiian people and is home to Hawaii’s largest heiau temple.
To maximize your experience, we recommend taking a hike. Ke Ala Loa O Maui/Piilani Trail is a three-mile hiking trail that is considered moderately difficult. Hiking this trail will give you an opportunity to see many highlights of the park, including the heiau, small lava tubes, sea caves, and spectacular views of the Hana Coast and slopes of Haleakala. On the hike, keep your eyes peeled for a variety of seabirds.
Before you visit Waianapanapa State Park and Honokalani Beach, you will need to make a reservation. Visit the state park website to reserve your entry and parking.
