The Maui Ocean Center is an aquarium located in Maalaea, about a 30-minute drive from our vacation rentals in Kapalua. They have a wide variety of sea creatures and exhibits for you to see, ranging from the reef to the open ocean and Hawaiian culture. There are also experiences you can enjoy for an extra fee, like shark diving.
The aquarium opened in 1998 with the goal of protecting Hawaii’s marine life. From exhibits to educational programs, the Maui Ocean Center is all about raising awareness so that these creatures continue to thrive for many years to come.
What Kind of Aquatic Life Can I Expect to See?
The Maui Ocean Center is home to a wide range of aquatic life. You may encounter magnificent creatures such as sharks, sea turtles, octopi, seahorses, rays, eels, fish, and so much more during your visit. They constantly rotate the creatures back to the ocean, so you never quite know what you will see.
What About Dolphins and Whales?
In compliance with a County of Maui ordinance, the Maui Ocean Center does not have whales, dolphins, or Hawaiian monk seals on exhibit. However, they have interpretive displays so you can learn more about these aquatic animals. One of the highlights of the Maui Ocean Center is the Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit and Sphere. This attraction is one of the aquarium’s newest and immerses visitors in a 3D Sphere where humpbacks soar above your head. It is a one-of-a-kind exhibit that will blow you away.
